Item description from seller

Third edition, the best, and only illustrated edition, royal 8vo (224 x 145 mm), viii, 356pp., steel-engraved portrait frontispiece of William Gilbart, steel-engraved portrait of Granville Sharp, over 90* other engraved and printed specimens, samples, drawings and advertisements, several printed on samples of special security and watermarked paper, with 15 red wax seals mounted on rear pastedown illustrating the new process of "tornography", with numerous other unpaginated leaves describing some of the products illustrated, original dark green half roan of marbled boards, a little rubbed, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, a very good copy. Granville Sharp (1825-1899), who was the accountant in the East of England Bank in Norwich, is best known to the historians of banking for this profusely illustrated book, first published in 1852 in a slim unillustrated 50 essay in response to a competition organised by James William Gilbart of the London and Westminster Bank, offering a prize (£100) for the best paper on the practical application to banking of the inventions and discoveries presented at the Great Exhibition of 1851. This third edition of Sharp's original paper is a richly illustrated and detailed exploration of a mid-nineteenth century bank at the cutting edge of technological innovation. It encompasses an exceptionally wide range of technical developments and inventions that influenced every aspect of banking, from the design and fittings of the bank itselfincluding its heating, lighting, and ventilationto the health and welfare of employees. It also examines the materials and equipment essential to daily operations, such as inks, paper, pens, account books, copying machines, printing and engraving processes, locks, cash boxes, safes, and much more. Above all, however, the volume highlights advances in security and engraving. The combination of artistic skill and scientific innovation proved crucial in the fight against banknote forgery, producing increasingly sophisticated methods of design and manufacture that made counterfeit notes far more difficult to reproduce. And so, the first 28 plates all provide samples of bank notes, watermarked security paper, bank cheques and similar material, several on coloured or tinted paper. They include a Perkins' bank note "with combination of difficult engraving", another, "faced upon Perkins and Co's patent for the prevention of anastatic and photographic forgery", and several examples of so-called forgery-proof notes and cheques. *Collation is relatively complex due to the numerous additional (but required) leaves, plates, and samples inserted throughout the volume, many of which are identified by lettered extensions. For example, plate 13 consists of the folding leaf "13" together with leaves 13A, 13A2, 13B, 13C, 13D, 13E, 13F, 13G, 13H, 13I, 13J, 13K, 13L, 13M, 13N, 13O, and 13P. Counted in this manner, the volume contains approximately 170 plates, samples, and promotional inserts. Provenance: Bookplate and ink ownership inscription 'William Smith, 37 Tavistock Square, 22/10/[18]58.'. …
