In sechs Studien wird gezeigt, wie sich Geschichtsbewusstsein - keineswegs eine Konstante der chinesischen Kultur - in einem langen Prozess gegenuber traditionalen Denkweisen herausbildete und wie Geschichte, einmal entdeckt, von konkurrierenden Gruppen behandelt wurde. Als, traditionale Geschichte' diente sie aristokratischer Legitimation angesichts historischer Kontingenz; als, exemplarische Geschichte' untermauerte sie die Geltungsanspruche einer aufstrebenden Bildungselite; und als, kritische Geschichte' forderte sie die Emanzipation von der Tradition und die Rechtfertigung einer radikal neuen Gesellschaftsordnung.
