About this Item
Hardcover in tan cloth lettered in black. 318 pp. Second printing, one month after the first. A tight, fine copy except for a small letter "x" written on the bottom edge of the text block and a vintage book plate front pastedown mostly covered by the jacket flap. In the very scarce original, strikingly designed dust jacket, price clipped, chipping to head edge of the spine strip and front tips and some creasing upper portion of the front panel and sunning to the spine. A critique of then-present-day Germany by a native journalist who, since 1933, devoted much time to a thorough study of the Nazi system. Haffner begins with Hitler himself and shows how his success was due to the harmony that existed between his personal psychology and that of the German masses. He then offers a striking examination of the Nazi elite and a fascinatng anaysis of the average Nazi mind of the rank-and-file. Finally, he discusses the psychology of that large section of the German peoplewho supported the Nazis, "brave, puzzled, Blimpish, ordinary folk" who were defenseless before the expert propaganda of Goebbles. The New York Times called the book, ".one of the most probing and unsparing critiques of his fellow country-men we have ever seen.". J.B. Priestly calle dit "a book of the very greatest significance" and A.A. Milne said, "However many books have been written about Hitler's Germany, this eliminates them. It is as exciting as a detective story.". Seller Inventory # E30486
