Gericault fragmenten van mededogen In 1908 verwierven De Vrienden van het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent op een Parijse veiling voor een mooie prijs een schilderij van Theodore Gericault (1791 - 1824) met als titel De waanzinnige moordenaar. Bij deze gelegenheid vroeg de lokale pers zich af wie er zo gek zou zijn om in zijn woonkamer het portret van een moordenaar op te hangen! Het portret ? dat eigenlijk dat van een kleptomaan was ? maakte samen met onder andere ?de ijverzuchtige? uit het Musee des Beaux-Arts de Lyon en de ?kinderdief? uit het Museum of Fine Arts in Springfield Massachusetts, deel uit van een reeks portretten van geestesgestoorden die door Gericault in het hospitaal la Salpetriere in Parijs geschilderd waren. Door deze reeks portretten, evenals door zijn meesterwerk Het vlot van de Medusa, kreeg Gericault snel naam als de schilder van de gruwel, van de pijn, van de waanzin en van de dood. De tentoonstelling in het Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent toont door middel van schilderijen, tekeningen, prenten en documenten een andere benadering van deze door de realiteit en alle aspecten van de menselijke natuur begeesterde kunstenaar. Door een vrijwillig streven naar een dagelijks bestaan, soms gelukkig, maar in een tijdsgewricht dat ten prooi was aan de stuiptrekkingen van de geschiedenis dikwijls ook gewelddadig of dodelijk, tracht Gericault de mens in al zijn facetten te ontraadselen. Hierbij legt hij getuigenis af van een diepe empathie voor zijn modellen, van wie het gelaat de littekens van het leven draagt. Door het verdriet maar ook de hartstochten van zijn tijdgenoten vol mededogen te willen delen, raakt hij uitgeput en vernietigt hij zichzelf. Werken van andere kunstenaars zoals Fussli, Goya, Delacroix en Menzel laten ons toe om de context waarin Gericault werkte beter te begrijpen. Books are offered if unsold. The order of incoming orders will be respected strictly. You can also order the book directly on www.erik-tonen-books.com and you get the best price - !!
Orders can be placed via e-mail (info@erik-tonen-books.be), or in writing, preferably not by telephone.
The books that are offered online are not available at our bookshop at 48 Kloosterstraat.
You will receive an e-mail confirming the availability of the book(s) and providing details with regard to shipment costs (we use Belgian and Dutch postal companies for the most cost-effective shipments.
The indicated shipment costs have been calculated according to the rates for shipments of up to 2 kilo. We will choose the most cost-effective shipment option, depending on the weight: either letter post or parcel post.
Abe-books charge your Payment, we send only the book to your adress.

Prices are net prices and free of VAT (margin arrangement) and expressed in euros.
Shipment and payments costs are charged to the customer. Shipment is at the customer's risk.

Ordered books will remain our property until payment has been received.
Cheques worden niet aanvaard vanwege de hoge bankkosten (17.50 euro).
Our books are shipped in decently packaged form; packing charges are 1 euro per shipment.
The state of the books is not specified if the works are in good condtion (smaller, minor defects such as an ex libris stamp, a name on the first page, minimal wear and tear etc. are not specified, unless specifically requested).
If the ordered works do not match the specified description, they may be reshipped within seven days after receipt, after prior notice.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to BOOKSELLER - ERIK TONEN BOOKS, Antwerpen, Belgium, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
Orders usually ship within 3 business days. Shipping costs are based on books weighing 4.2 LB, or 2 KG. If your book order is heavy or oversized, we may contact you to let you know extra shipping is required. ;
