Geriatric Medicine Handbook is a practical and structured introduction to the care of older adults, written for medical students, residents, clinicians, advanced practice providers, nurses, and healthcare learners who want to understand aging beyond a simple list of diseases.
Older adult care is different because medical problems often overlap with function, cognition, mobility, medication burden, nutrition, family support, independence, and goals of care. This handbook helps readers approach geriatric medicine with a clearer clinical framework, showing how aging changes the way illness presents, how frailty affects decision-making, and why successful care often depends on more than treating one diagnosis at a time.
Inside this book, readers will gain:
-
A clear introduction to the biology and clinical meaning of aging
-
A practical understanding of frailty, functional decline, falls, mobility problems, and vulnerability
-
Better insight into cognitive change, delirium, dementia, depression, and behavioral symptoms
-
A stronger approach to multimorbidity and complex chronic disease management
-
Guidance on medication review, polypharmacy risk, prescribing caution, and deprescribing principles
-
A structured way to assess activities of daily living, caregiver support, home safety, and care needs
-
Better understanding of nutrition, pain, sleep, continence, pressure injury risk, and rehabilitation
-
Practical support for goals-of-care conversations, advance care planning, transitions of care, and long-term support
-
A more person-centered way to connect diagnosis, function, quality of life, safety, and dignity
The book covers core areas of geriatric medicine, including comprehensive geriatric assessment, common geriatric syndromes, cognitive disorders, chronic disease in later life, medication safety, hospital care of older adults, post-acute care, nursing home medicine, palliative principles, caregiver issues, and ethical decision-making.
Geriatric Medicine Handbook does not present aging as a decline-only process or reduce older patients to their diagnoses. Its purpose is to help readers see the full clinical picture: what the patient can do, what has changed, what risks must be addressed, what support is available, and what outcomes matter most to the person receiving care.
Whether used during clinical training, geriatric rotations, primary care practice, hospital medicine, long-term care preparation, or professional review, this handbook offers a realistic and organized foundation for caring for older adults with greater confidence, respect, and clinical clarity.
