A guideline matters only when it can be translated into a plan that the whole care team can follow.
GERIATRIC MEDICINE CLINICAL GUIDELINES is built for the situations in which older-adult care becomes too complex for a single-disease approach. It brings medical assessment, rehabilitation priorities, medication decisions, safety concerns, communication, and patient preferences into the same clinical framework so that care remains coordinated even when several problems compete for attention.
Older adults may be recovering from illness while also dealing with frailty, cognitive change, falls risk, multimorbidity, medication burden, or reduced support at home. One clinician may be focused on disease control, another on mobility, another on discharge readiness, while the patient may be most concerned about remaining independent or avoiding treatment that creates more burden than benefit. Effective geriatric care depends on making those perspectives work together.
This reference helps readers move from fragmented recommendations toward a shared clinical plan. It emphasizes identifying reversible contributors to decline, recognizing the factors most likely to affect function, balancing treatment benefit against burden, and determining which priorities should guide the next stage of care. Functional recovery is treated as more than rehabilitation alone; it is connected to cognition, nutrition, mobility, medication safety, caregiver capacity, and the environment to which the patient will return.
Throughout the book, clinical guidance is approached as something that must be interpreted in context rather than applied mechanically. Readers are supported in coordinating complex cases, reviewing medications, addressing mobility and falls risk, recognizing delirium and cognitive change, planning rehabilitation, preparing safer care transitions, communicating with families, and aligning treatment choices with what matters most to the patient.
The book is designed for physicians, residents, medical students, advanced practice clinicians, and other professionals involved in the care of older adults across outpatient practice, hospital medicine, rehabilitation, long-term care, and transitions between settings.
The strongest geriatric plan is rarely the work of one discipline or one decision. It develops through clear priorities, coordinated action, and repeated reassessment.
Use GERIATRIC MEDICINE CLINICAL GUIDELINES to bring the care team around one workable plan—one that supports recovery, reduces avoidable harm, respects patient priorities, and remains realistic as health and function change.
