An older patient can have several established diagnoses, acceptable laboratory results, and still be quietly losing strength, mobility, confidence, or independence. In geriatric medicine, those changes often matter as much as the disease label itself.
GERIATRIC MEDICINE ASSESSMENT provides a practical clinical framework for evaluating older adults with attention to the outcomes that shape everyday life: health, function, independence, safety, comfort, and personal priorities. Rather than approaching each condition in isolation, the book helps readers consider how frailty, cognition, mobility, medications, nutrition, multimorbidity, living circumstances, and support systems interact when decisions are made.
The challenge in older adults is rarely a single abnormal finding. A medication that controls one condition may increase fall risk. Reduced mobility can accelerate deconditioning. Cognitive change may affect adherence and safety. Poor nutrition may reduce resilience. Several individually reasonable treatments may create an unrealistic burden when combined. Effective assessment therefore requires more than identifying what is wrong; it requires deciding what is reversible, what is progressing, what threatens function, and what deserves priority.
This reference is structured to support that broader reasoning. Readers are encouraged to look for potentially reversible causes of decline, recognize frailty and reduced physiologic reserve, examine medication burden, consider functional status alongside disease severity, and identify the practical factors that influence whether a care plan can succeed outside the consultation room.
Key areas include frailty, falls, polypharmacy, cognitive change, multimorbidity, nutritional concerns, mobility, functional reserve, support needs, and goals of care. These topics are treated as connected elements of clinical assessment rather than isolated checklists. The emphasis is on understanding how findings change management and how management choices may affect independence, comfort, and quality of life.
The book is particularly useful when standard disease-focused thinking is not enough. In complex older adults, the most appropriate plan may depend on balancing benefit against burden, recognizing when aggressive intervention is unlikely to improve meaningful outcomes, or shifting attention toward support and comfort as priorities change. That kind of judgment requires an assessment process that keeps the whole person in view.
Designed for physicians, trainees, and healthcare professionals who care for older adults, GERIATRIC MEDICINE ASSESSMENT offers a practical way to move from scattered findings toward a more coherent understanding of the patient. It supports decisions about what should be investigated, what can be improved, what requires monitoring, what may be causing harm, and what matters enough to shape the plan.
Before adding another diagnosis, test, or treatment, understand what the decision will mean for the person living with it. Make GERIATRIC MEDICINE ASSESSMENT a working reference for protecting function, supporting independence, and preserving comfort where they matter most.
