Item description from seller

First illustrated edition. 12mo. Publisher's green linen over boards; printed paper spine label; twelve unnumbered leaves of plates (lithographs); 36-pp publisher's ads at rear, dated March, 1840. External rubbing and wear, especially at board edges; remnants of spine label present but illegible; internally sound with some scattered foxing, including to plates (mostly marginal). A Good, sound copy. The first edition was published in Augusta, Georgia in 1835. Humorous vignettes illustrating antebellum Southern life, widely regarded as a precursor of the "local color" genre in American literature. The first edition is a noted rarity; this Harper edition, published four years later, though generally available, is uncommon in the original cloth. BAL 12946. HOWES L448.
