Print on Demand. This book documents the geological work of Charles Lapworth primarily focused on the Southern Uplands of Scotland where Lapworth spent significant time in the field in the mid to late 1800s. Lapworth's geological observations there led him to apply the simple rules and methods appropriate to the study of uncomplicated rock formations to a region of great structural complexity which he recognized could obscure the true geological history. He set to work on mapping the Southern Uplands in minute detail, applying paleontological as well as lithological evidence to unravel the complicated structures. This led to new insights on geological evolution, rock formation, species change, and how the new science of geology could be used to chronicle the distant past. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Geology
The geology of the greater part of England and a considerable part of Scotland had been mapped and described. The Geological Society had been publishing for sixty years, and several other societies and journals were making known the results of geological investigation. The series of rocks down to the base of the Carboniferous were fairly understood and consistently mapped, their succession and faunas were known in outline, and correlation was in a fairly satisfactory state. In some cases at home and abroad detailed zoning of the strata had been carried out.
