Moderate shelf wear. Scuffing to edges. Bumping, some loss to corners. Chipping to upper front board on Volume I. Library bookplates inside front boards from Brookline Public Library. Title page of Volume I detached but present. Clean, unmarked pages with minimal toning. Frontispiece illustration in each volume. Complee with 11 multi-folding steel-plate engraved maps. A scarce edition, complete and in good reading condition.James Rennell began his career as a midshipman in the Royal Navy before moving to the employ of the East India Company as Surveyor-General of Bengal. Rennell is noted for his Atlas of Bengal and for his creation of the first correct map of India. An injury forced his retirement from Bengal service and he turned his attention to comparative geography, reconciling ancient descriptions with modern maps. Rennell was known as an elder statesman of the geographical community, providing advice and consultation for contemporary geogrophers. Using the descriptions of Herodotus and other ancient authors, Rennell puts this material into modern context. Each section is accompanied by a map showing, and placing ancient sites into their modern positions.Please feel free to view our photographs.
