Massachusetts is not merely a place on a map-it is a layered archive of American history.
In The Genealogist's Guide to Massachusetts - Volume 2: Dukes to Middlesex Counties, genealogist and historical researcher Eric J. Ostroff takes readers deep into the archival heart of the Commonwealth's island, coastal, valley, and industrial counties. Covering Dukes, Essex, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire, and Middlesex Counties, this volume serves as a practical, historically grounded roadmap for anyone researching Massachusetts ancestry.
From the Wampanoag homelands of Martha's Vineyard to the whaling ports of Essex, from the Quabbin diaspora towns of Hampshire County to the industrial mill cities and academic centers of Middlesex, this guide helps researchers understand not only where records are found-but why they exist in the first place.
Unlike traditional location guides that simply list repositories, this book connects records to the historical forces that shaped them:
• Indigenous land stewardship and colonial deed translations
• Quaker meeting minutes and Congregational church registers
• Whaling crew agreements and maritime customs records
• Sheep farming allotments and proprietors' books
• Irish, Portuguese, Cape Verdean, and other immigrant parish records
• Industrial-era municipal documentation
• Military service files from colonial wars through World War II
• Town clerk vital records and shifting jurisdictional boundaries
Each county chapter opens with a concise historical framework, followed by detailed research strategies tailored to that region's unique documentary landscape. Cities, towns, villages, census-designated places, and named islands are examined individually, helping genealogists pinpoint where evidence survives and how to interpret it responsibly.
This volume emphasizes:
✔ Understanding who created the record and for what purpose
✔ Navigating overlapping town, county, and colonial jurisdictions
✔ Recognizing gaps and biases in the archive
✔ Incorporating Indigenous, African American, and immigrant sources
✔ Applying modern genealogical methodology and evidentiary standards
For beginners, this book provides clarity and structure. For advanced researchers, it offers nuance, context, and strategic depth.
Whether your ancestors were Vineyard whalers, Essex shipbuilders, Quabbin Valley farmers, Irish mill workers, or Middlesex industrial families, this guide equips you to reconstruct their lives within the evolving story of Massachusetts.
More than a directory of sources, The Genealogist's Guide to Massachusetts - Volume 2 is a companion for serious genealogical research-grounded in history, shaped by geography, and committed to inclusive storytelling.
