Print on Demand. This family memoir traces the Carpenter family from its origins in Switzerland, in the 17th century, to its establishment in Pennsylvania in the 18th century. It details the lives of numerous members of the Carpenter family, and their impact upon the communities in which they lived. The author provides rich contextual detail about the history of the era, the significant role of the family in the development of the state of Ohio, and influential contributions during the American Revolution. Through wars and peace, waves of immigration, and periods of intense political and social change, the narrative illuminates the lives of ordinary people whose stories embody the struggles and triumphs of America's formative years. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Biography and Autobiography
This edition interweaves the Carpenter family story with the broader chapters of early America, including the Civil War and the country’s westward development.
The book presents a careful chronicle of generations, tracing origins in Bern and Wattenwyl to settlements across Pennsylvania and Ohio. It combines ancestral records with the author’s own experiences as a surgeon in the Civil War, offering context for how a single lineage reflects the larger American story.
- Genealogical research spanning centuries and regions in Europe and the United States
- Autobiographical accounts from Dr. Seymour D. Carpenter, a Civil War surgeon
- Touchpoints with key moments in American history, from colonial times to the 19th and early 20th centuries
- Family portraits, local histories, and the preservation of records for future generations
Ideal for readers of family history, local history, and Civil War reminiscences who want a grounded, document-driven narrative.
