Synopsis
Volume 5 concentrates on reference values for dimensions and function of the heart, the pulmonary and the peripheral circulation. Added information is given on reference values for hormone concentrations in body fluids related to the circulatory system. Since the International System of Units has been employed in the preceding volumes, unreserved use of it is made in this volume, but the units preferred by cardiologists are also given. The standard by which all data on cardiac function have to be compared is still the invasive method, but new noninvasive techniques for investigation of various aspects of the heart and circulation have emerged with almost explosive vigor, and the results obtained by these techniques have been extensively dealt with in this book.
