Add to basket11" x 8½". Single sheet flyer, printed both sides. Very good: creased at old center fold; a few other faint creases; lightly toned with a bit of spotting. This is a double-sided flyer announcing the many and varied events scheduled for Gay Pride Week 1979 in Dallas, Texas. Though not explicitly stated, the calendar came from the collection of longtime Texas- and Illinois-based social activist, Buff Carmichael. Buff Carmichael lived his first 44 years in Texas; he was a funeral director in small towns who organized against the death penalty and forged meaningful connections with the communities he served. After moving to Springfield, Illinois, Carmichael founded the Prairie Flame, the first LGBTQ+ newspaper to serve downstate communities, in 1996. It ran until 2008. Carmichael served as co-chair of the 2013 March on Springfield for Marriage Equality, co-founded the Coalition of Rainbow Alliances, served on the local board of the ACLU and as a volunteer youth mentor. He died in 2021. This schedule of events spans June 23 - July 1, 1979 and lists the various activities for Gay Pride Week including the Gay Community Awareness Book Fair and Arts and Crafts Festival as well as a "special memorial church service" where "the entire gay community is welcome regardless of church affiliation." There was a march, a picnic, a benefit weightlifting meet and a "Razzle Dazzle" disco dance. The Dallas Motorcycle Club sponsored a "Macho Man Contest," and "an afternoon with Gertrude Stein" was held at the convention center, sponsored by the American Library Association Gay Task Force. A rare relic of LGBTQ+ activism in Texas. No holdings found in OCLC, though a Google search revealed one at the University of North Texas.
