Paperback. The archive smelled of old paper and cedar oil, the way it always had, the way Liora supposed it always would. She stood at the tall window on the third floor, watching the last light drain from the sky over Aethoria's harbor. The water had gone the color of pewter. Lanterns were being lit along the dockside walk, one after another, the lamplighters moving at their evening pace, unhurried. She had a cup of tea gone cold on the windowsill.Between the lantern flames and the darkening sky there was a layer of light she had no real name for-not dusk, not dark, something between. Her gift had always attuned her to that layer. She could feel it more than see it, a kind of fabric stretched over the visible world, faintly luminous along its seams where one kind of reality pressed against another. Tonight the fabric looked different. The seams were looser. Not wrong exactly, not yet, but the way a well-made door might feel when the wood has begun to dry and the frame has shifted a degree out of true. She picked up her tea, sipped it cold, made a small face.Behind her, the archive held twelve years of catalogued knowledge: star charts, geological surveys, a hundred maps of Aethoria's coastlines and highlands, the reports and testimony they had all contributed over the years following the Frost King's defeat. Good work. Careful work. The kind of work you do when you believe the worst is past and there is time again for patience. This item is printed on demand.
