Print on Demand. This book delves into the fascinating and complex world of pulse-jets, engines that propelled notorious wartime inventions like the V-1 "Buzz Bomb." While previous attempts to understand these engines relied on simplified models, the author constructs a comprehensive framework that accounts for the intricate interplay of wave propagation, combustion, and turbulence within the motor. Drawing on experimental data and advanced mathematical tools, the author meticulously analyzes the gas dynamics of pulse-jets, offering fresh insights into their operation and potential for improvement. This exploration sheds light on critical aspects like flame speed, pressure variations, and the crucial role of turbulence in enhancing combustion. By illuminating the fundamental mechanisms at play within pulse-jets, this book paves the way for the design of more efficient and powerful engines, while simultaneously deepening our understanding of these remarkable machines. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A clear, math-backed look at pulse-jet waves and combustion
This book presents a one-dimensional, hydro-thermodynamic formulation for pulse-jet waves and burning. It ties together known data, prior theories, and a framework for future experiments and design. It explains how wave propagation, flame fronts, and burning duration interact in pulse-jets with non-uniform cross sections. An idealized example is worked out to first order, showing how pressure, speed, and ignition behavior can be analyzed using a consistent set of equations.
- Foundational equations for intake, flame spread, and exhaust in pulse-jets
- Discussion of how boundary conditions and non-uniform gas properties affect results
- An explicit, though simplified, example to connect theory with observed features
- Guidance on the kinds of experimental data that help validate the model
