Paperback. "Garden Varieties" is a compelling collection of six one-act plays and a burlesque that showcases Kenyon Nicholson's versatility and sharp wit as a prominent dramatist of the early twentieth century. This anthology offers a vibrant glimpse into the theatrical landscape of the 1920s, blending humor, irony, and keen human insight. The pieces within this volume range from lighthearted comedies to more poignant explorations of domestic and social life, reflecting the diverse "varieties" of human experience and emotion as captured through the lens of the stage.Throughout the collection, Nicholson demonstrates a mastery of the short-form play, utilizing tight dialogue and clever characterizations to create impactful dramatic moments in a condensed format. Whether exploring the quirks of contemporary society or presenting farcical situations, the works in "Garden Varieties" remain engaging examples of American playwriting from a pivotal era in the arts. This collection serves as an excellent resource for students of drama, theater historians, and readers who appreciate the art of the well-crafted one-act play. Nicholson's ability to capture the spirit of his time through these varied theatrical vignettes ensures that "Garden Varieties" remains a significant and entertaining contribution to the American dramatic canon. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
