The Numbers Say Walk Away From the Customer.
Roger Alexander has one problem: he doesn't believe them.
Roger has just taken over Boone Packaging, a manufacturing company built by a successful founder who is finally ready to let go. The company has experienced people, capable equipment, loyal customers—and a financial system that can explain exactly what everything costs.
Then one of its most important customers asks for something the numbers say Boone shouldn't give them.
Roger starts asking questions.
What he discovers isn't an accounting problem. It's a business problem.
The financial statements are right. The costs have been calculated correctly. The margins are real.
But the decisions those numbers are driving don't always make sense.
Roger begins pulling at the assumptions underneath them. What actually changes if Boone takes the next order? What costs have already been committed? What happens when equipment and people are sitting idle? Does every customer really need to carry the same share of the company's costs? And what is the cost of saying no?
The questions quickly spread beyond Finance.
A founder who promised his wife he would finally walk away has to decide whether he can really let someone else lead the company.
A CFO who has spent years protecting the business begins to see that protecting the numbers and helping people make better decisions aren't always the same thing.
A plant manager who understands the operation better than anyone discovers what becomes possible when Operations is finally given access to the economics behind its decisions.
And a young finance professional begins crossing the distance between reporting what happened and helping the business decide what should happen next.
What starts with one customer becomes something much bigger.
The team begins questioning the way it prices business, uses capacity, allocates costs, evaluates vertical integration, and decides where the company should compete. More importantly, people who spent years waiting for answers from the top begin learning how to find those answers themselves.
The Gap is a business novel about the distance between the numbers and reality—and what can happen when Finance and Operations finally learn to see the same business.
In the tradition of The Goal, the lessons aren't delivered through a textbook. They emerge through the decisions, disagreements, mistakes and discoveries of people trying to run a real company.
Along the way, The Gap explores questions leaders confront every day:
What does the next piece of business actually cost?
When should fixed costs influence a decision—and when shouldn't they?
How should unused capacity change the way we think about an opportunity?
When do accounting allocations reveal reality—and when do they hide it?
How can a company price for the circumstances in front of it rather than an average that doesn't actually exist?
And what happens when the people closest to the work are given the information, authority and trust to make better decisions?
The Gap isn't an argument against accounting. The financial statements still have to be right.
But financial statements were designed to tell us what happened.
Leaders have to decide what happens next.
Those are two different jobs.
And sometimes they require two different ways of looking at the same numbers.
For founders, executives, management accountants, controllers, operations leaders, plant managers—and anyone who has ever looked at a financially correct answer and thought:
That can't possibly be the whole story.
