The Gamekeeper at Home: Sketches of Natural History and Rural Life — Richard Jefferies Smith, Elder & Co., London, 1887. New Edition. Hardcover in original dark green cloth with decorative black and gilt stamping to the front board, and gilt lettering and ornamentation to the spine. No dust jacket. A classic work of Victorian nature writing by Richard Jefferies, one of the foremost observers of the English countryside. Drawing on his detailed knowledge of rural life, Jefferies explores the world of the gamekeeper, the habits of birds and wild animals, and the changing landscapes and traditions of nineteenth-century England. This attractive 1887 edition retains its original decorated cloth binding, with a distinctive gilt and black botanical design. Condition: Good. Original green cloth boards with some rubbing, light surface marks and wear to the corners and spine ends, particularly at the foot of the spine. Decorative gilt and black stamping remains attractive, and the gilt spine lettering is largely legible. Scattered foxing and age-related discolouration to the preliminary and title pages. Previous owner's handwritten inscription on the half-title page. No dust jacket. An appealing Victorian edition for collectors of Richard Jefferies, natural history, rural literature and nineteenth-century decorative bindings. Please see photographs.…
