Focusing on the cases of Galileo, Robert Oppenheimer, and Andrei Sakharov, this study examines the conflicts that have arisen when science clashes with the powers of government
Synopsis: A study of the major movements of scientific thought over the past four centuries which demonstrate the conflict between scientific discovery and the powers-that-be. The author focuses on three individuals: Galileo, Robert Oppenheimer, and Andre Sakharov. In 1633 Galileo's theories and findings caused a theological and philosophical tempest; he was charged as a heretic and brought before the Inquisition. In 1954 Oppenheimer - father of the American atom bomb - was forced to appear before a latter-day Inquisition, the Security Board of Inquiry. Sakharov, who was instrumental in producing the hydrogen bomb, was pilloried and exiled.
