A vivid account of the licentious court of Charles II, ostensibly the Memoirs of Philbert, Comte de Grammont (1621-1707), A Gascon nobleman, who had served in the French army but was exiled and fled to the English court, from 1662-64, attending again in 1670, 1671, 1676 and 1688 (James II). He dictated his account of his early life, at the age of eighty, to his brother-in-law, Anthony (Antoine) Hamilton (1646-1720), who is considered the principal author of the Memoirs. Hamilton, a Roman Catholic, was born in Ireland and spent much of his early life in France, later serving with the forces of James II in Ireland, 1689-90. The work was first published in French as the Mémoires and in English in 1714, with many later editions following. This copy, in a handsome Riviere binding, was owned by Arthur Stuart Beazley of Bethersden (1884-1984), member of the Kent Archaeological Society.
