Grammar That Works: Practical English Grammar for Speaking, Writing and Everyday Communication is a five-part, application-focused English grammar course designed particularly for learners who know some English but struggle to use grammar accurately and naturally in real communication, interviews, IELTS and PTE.
Part 1 — Present Time
The book begins with the foundations learners need to talk about themselves and everyday life: am/is/are, there is/there are, Present Simple, frequency expressions, Present Continuous, have/have got and demonstratives. It repeatedly contrasts similar structures—for example, I work vs I am working—and targets errors commonly made by Indian learners.
Part 2 — Past & Experience
The second part develops the grammar of storytelling: was/were, Past Simple, irregular verbs, Past Continuous, used to, Present Perfect, just/already/yet/ever/never and for/since/ago. The learner ultimately combines these forms to tell a coherent two-minute story, making the section particularly relevant to IELTS Speaking Part 2 and PTE speaking tasks.
Part 3 — Future, Modals & Voice
This section teaches learners how to express plans, predictions, intentions, ability, obligation, advice, requests and passive information. It distinguishes will, going to and Present Continuous according to meaning rather than forcing learners to memorise rigid rules. It also directly applies modals and passive structures to IELTS Speaking and Writing.
Part 4 — Connections & Constructions
Here the book moves beyond basic tense accuracy into the small structures that make English sound natural and sophisticated: prepositions, conditionals, reported speech, indirect questions, purpose and contrast constructions, phrasal verbs and spelling. The section specifically attacks errors such as discuss about, despite of, although…but, If I will… and look forward to meet.
Part 5 — Questions, Writing & Communication
The final part turns grammar into usable communication. It covers yes/no and Wh- questions, quantity and duration questions, question tags, complex sentences, relative clauses, paragraph writing, email writing, responses and a final error clinic. The learner finishes by combining the skills to ask, write and reply.
The book's distinctive teaching system
The strongest selling point is arguably the Speak Smart methodology:
See → Understand → Practise → Speak
Each unit starts with a realistic situation, gives a short rule and form table, highlights a Common Trap, provides exercises, and ends with a speaking drill. The book also includes IELTS/PTE exam links and answer keys.
The examples deliberately use familiar Indian contexts—homes, offices, colleges, trains, festivals, cities and exams—rather than presenting grammar as disconnected textbook sentences.
In one sentence:
Grammar That Works is a practical, speak-first grammar course that teaches learners not merely to know English grammar, but to use it accurately in conversation, writing, everyday communication, IELTS and PTE.
