"The Glorious First of June, 1794, the first full-scale naval battle in the war with Revolutionary France, is remembered with honour, even though, strategically, it was not successful. Lord Howe defeated Admiral Villaret-Joyeuse, took six ships of the line, and sank 'Le Vengeur', without losing a single British ship, but a precious convoy, the cause of the action, reached France in safety. Although French sacrifice had not been in vain, Howe had shown that, in general combat, the British navy was incomparable. (This) is the only extensive account of the fight, and of Lord Howe's methods as an admiral, to have been written during the past century. In an Epilogue, Mr. Warner considers the subject of Sovereign's honours and awards to the Royal Navy, which in a particular sense derived from royal recognition of Howe's victory. Mr. Warner at one time served as Secretary to the Admiralty Committee on awards in time of war, and his account is authoritative." Previous owner's small stamp on each of the front endpapers, very light edgewear, small bump at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has light edgewear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
