Several diagnoses. Twelve medications. A recent fall. New confusion. Three guidelines pointing in different directions. What should come first?
That question sits at the heart of geriatric medicine.
Caring well for an older adult is rarely a matter of finding one diagnosis and following one treatment pathway. A medicine that benefits one condition may increase falls or confusion. An aggressive target may offer long-term benefit while adding immediate treatment burden. A hospital stay may resolve the acute illness yet leave mobility and independence worse than before.
GERIATRIC MEDICINE PRACTICE is built for those difficult intersections.
Rather than separating frailty, function, cognition, medications, mobility, multimorbidity, and personal priorities into disconnected subjects, this book shows how they influence one another—and how those interactions should change assessment, treatment, monitoring, and follow-up.
Readers will learn how to:
- establish baseline function, cognition, physiologic reserve, and patient priorities before interpreting a new problem;
- recognize falls, confusion, weakness, reduced intake, and loss of independence as clinical signals rather than inevitable consequences of age;
- turn comprehensive geriatric assessment into a prioritized care plan instead of a collection of screening scores;
- identify medication burden, prescribing cascades, adverse effects, and situations in which simplification or deprescribing deserves consideration;
- reason through multimorbidity when disease-specific recommendations conflict;
- weigh benefit, harm, time to benefit, treatment workload, recovery potential, and the outcomes a patient values most;
- protect mobility, cognition, nutrition, function, and independence during illness, hospitalization, rehabilitation, and transitions of care;
- approach delirium, dementia, frailty, falls, pain, nutrition, chronic disease, acute deterioration, and serious illness with greater clinical structure; and
- communicate decisions, uncertainty, responsibilities, warning signs, and follow-up more clearly across patients, caregivers, and professional teams.
The learning experience goes well beyond conventional chapter summaries. Clinical cases place difficult decisions in context, while reasoning exercises, patient-safety features, evidence discussions, review questions, applied management problems, and practical appendices encourage readers to test how they would think, not merely what they can remember.
This is particularly useful for medical learners, residents, clinicians, and members of the wider healthcare team who want a clearer method for approaching older patients whose needs cannot be reduced to one disease or one guideline.
When the hardest question is no longer “What does the guideline recommend?” but “What makes sense for this particular patient?”, keep GERIATRIC MEDICINE PRACTICE within reach. Add it to your clinical or study library and build a more deliberate, organized, and patient-focused approach to the decisions that matter most.
