Your next patient is 84, takes 14 medications, fell twice this month, and has a chief complaint of "feeling off." What do you do first?
Most references teach disease by disease. Older adults arrive with several conditions at once, atypical symptoms, shrinking physiologic reserve, and goals that do not fit a single guideline. Delirium looks like fatigue, heart failure looks like confusion, and a new drug often causes the next symptom. Clinicians chase labs, add prescriptions, and overlook the one thing the patient cares about most.
Geriatric Medicine Fundamentals 2027 organizes the specialty around how older adults actually present, in 25 chapters and more than 155,000 words. It moves from the biology of aging through comprehensive geriatric assessment to the syndromes you will manage every week.
What sets this book apart
- Aging physiology of the heart, lungs, kidneys, gut, brain, senses, skin, and bone, linked directly to dosing and diagnosis
- Comprehensive geriatric assessment, functional testing, and cognitive screening you can run in a 20-minute visit
- Polypharmacy, prescribing cascades, the 2023 Beers Criteria, and a practical deprescribing process
- Delirium, Alzheimer disease and other dementias (including anti-amyloid therapy), late-life depression, and behavioral symptoms
- Falls, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, frailty, incontinence, pressure injuries, nutrition, perioperative care, palliative care, and care transitions
What you will learn
- Demographics, principles of geriatric care, and the biology and theories of aging
- Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, thyroid disorders, infections, and immunization adapted to older adults
- Pain, sleep, hearing, vision, ethics, long-term care, and elder mistreatment
How every chapter is built
- 5 to 9 focused sections per chapter, each closing with a Clinical Pearl you can use the same day
- Case vignettes that walk through the reasoning, not only the answer
- Comparison tables and Key Points boxes for fast review
- Decision-pathway boxes that lay out a setup, two paths, and the factor that tells them apart
- Differential-diagnosis mini-tables and quick-reference sidebars
- 50 original labeled illustrations, two per chapter
- A bridge at the end of each chapter into the next, so the book reads as one course
Online bonuses. Scan the QR code on the last page and enter the activation code printed in the book to unlock:
- 300 board-style practice questions in 25 chapter banks, with feedback after every answer
- 375 flashcards in 25 chapter sets
- A video course of 64 hand-picked lessons mapped to the chapters
This 2027 edition reflects current AGS, ACC/AHA, ADA, IDSA, CDC, and Alzheimer's Association guidance, and is written for physicians, residents, and nurse practitioners.
