Blue line map, 55x115 cm (23 x 44 inches), folded. Detailed map of California, Nevada and Utah, from the California-Oregon border in the north to Santa Cruz county in the south, and from the Pacific in the west to just beyond Moab in the east. The Western Pacific Railroad was founded in 1903 (as the Western Pacific Railway) to compete with rail service provided by the Southern Pacific Railroad in northern California. Construction on what became known as the Feather River Route was financed in part by the Denver & Rio Grande and Rio Grande Western railroads, both owned by George Gould, the son of legendary mogul Jay Gould. Completed in 1909, it was the last major rail line from the east into California. The Western Pacific's Feather River Route competed with the Southern Pacific's overland route for rail traffic between Salt Lake City, Utah, and Oakland, California, for nearly 80 years. In 1982, the Western Pacific was acquired by the Union Pacific Corporation and it was soon merged into their Union Pacific Railroad. Initialed and dated 30 April 1931 by a former owner.
