This composition workbook is ideal for GCSE Music students, beginners exploring creative writing, and teachers seeking structured material for lessons or home learning. It supports learners with or without prior experience, helping them understand how musical ideas are formed and how a complete composition can be developed with confidence. The book works well as a study companion for coursework preparation and classroom practice.
The first section introduces key elements of composing in a clear and accessible way. Learners explore rhythm, pitch, melody, harmony, texture, phrase structure, word setting, and instrumentation, all explained with practical guidance. These concepts can be applied to any musical style, making the material suitable for a wide range of student projects. The explanations are straightforward and encourage students to think creatively while learning essential techniques.
The second section contains eight guided composition projects based on different musical styles and forms, including verse-chorus songs, minimalism, theme and variations, musique concrète, and film music. Each project walks students step by step through the full writing process, from shaping initial ideas to completing a polished piece ready for submission. This structured approach helps students build skills progressively and stay motivated as they develop their own musical voice.
