FIRST EDITION THUS. Large 8vo. 9 x 6.5 inches. xi + [i] + 142 + [1] pp. Bound in original green cloth, gilt, with decorative gilt borders on front board and gilt blocks on spine, in matching dud=st wrapper, which has some loss at top edge and head and tail of spine. A little wear to extremities, spotting of edges, and some scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. 1916 inscription on first free endpaper. Illustrated by 8 colour tipped in plates, protected by captioned tissue guards. Michael Fairless was the pseudonym of Margaret Fairless Barber (1869-1901), Yorkshire born Christian writer. Brother Hilarius, first published by John Murray, 1901, a work of religious fiction set in monastic times, was her first published title, followed by her very successful book of meditations, The Roadmender (1902).
