A novelty puzzle game, consisting of a two-piece box, measuring about 2 5/8" x 6". Box is covered in yellow paper, printed in black. Inside the box is a nicely lithographed view of the Klondike Gold Rush region, with named places, such as Yukon River, Skaguay [sic] Trail, and Chilkoot Pass. In the center of the map is a gold-plated rimmed bowl with the word "Klondike" stamped in black. Two capsules (of three) containing a ball bearing are loosely inserted (the third ball bearing is present, but missing its capsule). The capsules are painted gold, though most of the gold is faded away. Per the instructions on the box: "The object of this puzzle is to get the three gold bugs into the Klondike through the Pass." A small opening on one side of the rim in the center allows for the player to get the "nuggets" into the bowl. Very nearly complete, lacking only the one capsule, and generally in very good condition, with the noted fading to the two capsules, and foxing and soiling to the box. Some flecking and soiling to the bowl at the center of the game, but the lithograph well-preserved. Overall very good. The Klondike Gold Rush was the last great mineral craze of the 19th century. In 1897, a large gold deposit was discovered in a remote corner of the Yukon, near the Alaskan border, and Americans and Canadians flooded the boomtown of Dawson City on the banks of the Yukon River to seek their fortunes. During the craze, the terms present in this game, such as "Klondike," "Chilkoot Pass," and "Yukon River" would have been household names, known even to young boys and girls with an appetite for adventure stories. Games and toys celebrating the gold rush were produced in large numbers, but as the craze went bust, so did the national interest in anything "Klondike." While we've seen the game appear occasionally in commerce, we found none as of this listing, and find no separately listed holdings in special collections libraries.
