Item description from seller

ANTHONY COLBY (November 13, 1792 July 20, 1873) served as the 20th governor of New Hampshire. He also owned and operated a grist mill and a stage line. He was also active in the War of 1812, attaining the rank of major general in 1837. Colby ran for governor in 1846 as a Whig nominee. Colby writes a one-page ALS, 7 ¾ x 9 7/8, March 19, 1841, to the law firm of Hayes and Cogswell, South Berwick, Maine, regarding business matters. .I also received your account of the levy against Chas. Cushing. When I recd the account I was surprised at the charge you made of 59.07 and did hope to meet you and have some conversation on the subject. It seemed to me quite hard enough to suffer the loss of 5000 Dols by Cushing which I am illy able to bear. It has embarrassed all my business for it was money that I relied on to carry forward what I had commenced. But I was advised by your friends to employ you to make the levy saying that you would take no advantage of me and although an entire stranger, I did think from the title attached to your name that you would execute the business under all the existing circumstances for a reasonable compensation. Will you be so good as to write again on the subject and if I must pay the full amount of this charge, I will make arrangement with some friend in Portsmouth to settle with you as soon as possible? Respectfully yours Anthony Colby Nice integral address leaf with manuscript postage. Folds, even toning. One tear reinforced with archival tape.
