Synopsis:

Excerpt from Function and Use of Transformers in Electrical Work: Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Electrical Engineer in the Graduate School of the University of Illinois, 1909

In the range of voltage limitations the designing engineer has passed far beyond those prescribed for transmission systems which thus far have reached a maximum of to volts. Transformers have been repeatedly built for voltages two to three times these values and although used for experimental and theoretical investigations only, they have demonstrated their adaptability to practical service.

The transformers for the generating station are used to step up or raise the generating voltage to the proper value for transmission. The extent of this increase is governed directly by the distance to the center of distribution and the voltage necessary to efficiently carry the power required is a factor in deciding the type of transformer to be used.
