The way sacred ideas evolve with moral growth can reshape communities.
This study, Religion as Human Work, links the history of belief to the growth of human conscience, showing how faith both reflects and moves human life.
Across chapters, the author argues that gods and holy laws arise from real human needs and strivings. As people’s moral horizons widen, their deities and rituals change, shifting from simple, concrete images to more abstract, universal ideals. The book also considers how faith in one God or in shared ethical standards can unite diverse peoples and support a common humanity.- Discover how moral progress influences religious imagination, from concrete worship to inward faith.
- See how the biblical world is read alongside modern thought, without losing the sense of religion as a living force.
- Learn how monotheism and universal morality shape the idea of God and guide human conduct.
- Understand the ongoing conversation between past faiths and present life, and why doubt can deepen belief.
