"Sam" Fry was one of the most influential post-war Submariners, spending 28 of his 39 years in the Navy in boats, commanding five (Acheron, Talent, Artful, Osiris and, finally, the vastly different Valiant-class nuclear submarine, Courageous). His only surface ship command was the GMD - HMS Fife – where he took over from over from Jeremy Black for the latter part of a commission. This book is a “must read” for any submariner or surface ship man – well written, but in a style that will appeal to “Jack” as it rattles through his hectic 39-year naval career.
Synopsis: This is a memoir. Sam Fry takes the reader on a journey through his rich and varied life. After entering the Royal Navy, he quickly achieved recognition going on to command five submarines and a destroyer. Captain Fry was in the Navy for 39 years, 28 years as a submariner ending as the Captain of the Polaris Squadron. He was awarded on OBE following operations in the Nuclear submarine Courageous, of which he was the first CO. "Fruitful Rewarding Years" will act as an inspiration to all those interested in matters naval.
