Within weeks their slingshot, the fronde, has become the emblem of a rebellion that brings the most powerful monarchy in Europe to the edge of collapse. For five years France tears itself apart. Twelve hundred barricades seal the streets of Paris. A ten-year-old king flees his capital by night, and his court sleeps on straw. About the Author
Amable Humbert grew up in Dublin in a family that traces its roots to the French Protestants who crossed to Ireland after Louis XIV revoked the Edict of Nantes, and the question of how that king came to wield such power has followed him ever since. A lifelong reader of seventeenth-century memoirs, he is drawn to the moments when great states nearly come apart and to the ordinary people who pay for the quarrels of the powerful. His writing combines a historian's patience with the archive and a storyteller's instinct for the telling scene. He divides his time between Dublin and France, where he is at work on a history of the reign of Louis XIV.
