Item description from seller

A fascinating two-volume first edition from Sir Arthur Helps. The edition is introduced by the author, who marks that no one but those who have known intellectual society and then been deprived of it can truly appreciate the intense relief of discovering it again. In the vein of preserving for posterity this treasured discourse, Helps chronicles the learned discussions of his friends on such diverse subjects as truth, conformity, despair, greatness, education, public life, reading, criticism, the state of the poor, government, and slavery. The discussions make for enlightening reading, both in a Victorian and a contemporary light. In decorative calf binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, though with some marking to extremities and backstrip and strain to joints. There is also some surface loss to one of the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean throughout. Good.
