Paperback. Maigret heads to an island off the Cote d'Azur in this new translation, part of the Penguin Maigret seriesThere was a strong mistral blowing. I don't know what the mistral was doing there, but from what I've understood it has a certain importance. It's because of the mistral, in particular, that Marcellin, rather than going to sleep on his boat as he usually does, headed for a shack that stands near the harbour, where the fishermen store their nets. A small time crook has been murdered on an Mediterranean island--a thug, drunk, pimp and thief--yet just before he died he was heard boasting about his friend Maigret! Maigret, who is mentoring Scotland Yard detective, Inspector Pyke, travels to sun-drenched Porquerolles Island to investigate. 'Compelling, remorseless, brilliant' John Gray
'The palm trees around the railway station were motionless, fixed in a Saharan sun . . . It really felt as if they were stepping into another world, and they were embarrassed to be entering it in the dark clothes that had been suited to the rainy streets of Paris the evening before.'
An officer from Scotland Yard is studying Maigret's methods when a call from an island off the Côte d'Azure sends the two men off to an isolated community to investigate its eccentric inhabitants.
Penguin is publishing the entire series of Maigret novels in new translations.
'His artistry is supreme' John Banville

About the Author
Georges Simenon was born in Liège, Belgium in 1903. An intrepid traveller with a profound interest in people, Simenon strove on and off the page to understand, rather than to judge, the human condition in all its shades. His novels include the Inspector Maigret series and a richly varied body of wider work united by its evocative power, its economy of means, and its penetrating psychological insight. He is among the most widely read writers in the global canon. He died in 1989 in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he had lived for the latter part of his life.
