Print on Demand. This book is a thoroughly researched examination of the French playwright Regnard, and his most celebrated comedy Le Joueur, considered a masterpiece of French theatre. The author, Gaston Mason, provides both a close reading of the play and analysis of its theatrical significance within the context of French drama. Le Joueur is an uproarious comedy about a young man addicted to gambling and the lengths he will go to in order to finance his vice. The story was daring for its time, a hilarious look at the destructive power of addiction, but also a subtle exploration of the nature of desire and the human condition. By presenting an in-depth analysis of the play's historical and literary context, the author reveals an important chapter in the development of French comedy, adding nuance and insight to Regnards position in the theatrical landscape of the 17th and 18th centuries. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
