This is a companion workbook to Freewriting for Travel Writers: How to use a creative freewriting technique to improve your travel writing. It can also be used as a standalone creative travel writing workbook.
If you need help powering through writer's block or getting out of a travel writing rut these fifty thought-provoking prompts are the vehicle you need to steer you towards creative confidence.
If you’re not emotionally connecting with your topic, it is too easy to rely on using cliches or writing generic content that is similar to every other writer’s version. But when you use freewriting to tap into your subconscious you strip away that primary analytical layer and tap into the emotional core of how a destination or experience made you feel.
The Freewriting for Travel Writers how to guide ebook and paperback books include a 100 travel writing prompts to get your freewriting creative juices flowing, and it's these prompts that are included in two companion workbooks (50 travel writing prompts each), so that you can step away from your keyboard and use pen and paper to practice your freewriting.
This is book one.
How to use this travel writing workbook
- Choose the travel writing prompt you want to work on and set your timer.
- I’ve included a date and time limit box at the beginning of each prompt so that you can keep track of when you worked on the prompt and the length of your freewriting session.
- I’ve allotted you three full pages for each prompt, using pale grey lines so that if you don’t want to write between the lines your can set your creative spirit free without feeling constrained.
- There are spaces to capture blog post ideas and travel prompts for future freewriting sessions.
- You can also use this page to jot down any key learnings or things you experienced during your freewriting session. Was it fruitful? Did you struggle to concentrate? Were there lots of distractions? Did you get into the zone? Whatever you felt, capture your thoughts and impressions on your brainstorming page.
- At the end of each prompt I’ve included a 5-star status box to capture the success of your freewriting session. This isn’t intended to be a grade, it's merely a reminder of how well your session went so you can look back on your progress as your work through the prompts.
Although freewriting is used extensively by fiction writers, it’s also an extremely useful tool for nonfiction writers. No matter what you write, sometimes you’re going to to struggle with how to start a new chapter of your book, or get in the right head-space to write your next blog article.
Freewriting helps you brush away the analytical cobwebs and forces your mind to rely more heavily on your creative side. Use the freewriting technique whenever you need it. Start your day with a session to get your writing muscles warmed up. Freewrite throughout the day to energize your writing. Or end your day with a freewriting session to capture your dormant thoughts.
Freewriting allows you to subconsciously explore a train of thought. It takes you in a direction your conscious mind hasn't dared venture into. Some of your thoughts will lead you to a dead end, but others may spark an idea that is well worth expanding into a fully fledged article.
My Freewriting for Travel Writers how to guide ebook and paperback provides all the details behind my seven-point approach to freewriting, plus freewriting examples, evaluations, and the article ideas I generated from one of my own freewriting session where I used the prompt: “How do I create a niche approach for writing about Paris?”
Be Creative. Be Inspired.
