About this Item
I'm not identifying this book as a First Edition but it is possible that it is one. Prior to 1930 Scribner first editions were typically indicated by the presence of the Scribner Seal on the copyright page. However, it was not always the case. With this book, there is no seal. However, 1899 (the year the book was originally published) is present on both the copyright and title page. From my searches, that alone makes the book unique. In other words, I could not find another copy for sale published by Scribner's Sons that was published in 1899. All of the others were later editions. Condition-wise this book has a lot going for it. Despite being 121 years old, it remains solidly bound (the front cover makes a slight crinkling sound when opened wide but no cracks/spaces between either cover and their end papers). And as you can see from the photographs, the covers show only minor soiling and wear. There is a penciled name and date (1900) on the first front free end paper. That is the only writing to be found in the book. And there aren't any markings. And the pages aren't creased. There are 12 full-page b&w illustrations including the frontispiece which is protected by a tissue guard. All 12 illustrations are present and in good shape. One page in the text has a small tear off the top edge. Three pages have just a little roughness at their middle edge. There are a few small stains (probably water) at the juncture of the top page edge and middle page edge. They can be seen also on the pages themselves off of their top and middle edges. They are light and mostly blend into the paper's color. They are 1/2 inch to 1 inch in size. They can also be seen on the illustrations. I've provided a two photographs to give you a clear idea of how this looks. 339 pages followed by 2 pages of ads. Seller Inventory # 000857
