About this Item
12mo, 60pp, b&w photographs throughout, obituary in French at back of volume, with the officer's name redacted (i). Gray cloth pictorial covers with title in red and subtitle in blue above illustration of battlefield. No title on gray spine. Covers are slightly dusy and spine is sunned. Internally, small previous owner signature on ffep; a postcard inserted at page 9 has left a shadow, o/w very good. This is a collection of letters from a French reserve Artillery Officer (who the author met in 1913), who was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor and who died in action in April 1916 near Verdun. The author writes, "I have taken it upon myself to publish the following extracts from his letters, together with a few reproductions of the photographs, without asking leave, but with the thought that if his name was not mentioned, no one could object, and that by the sale of this little volume I might aid his loved ones". Begins with a fascinating description by the artillery officer of the state of mind and atmosphere in France at the time of the mobilization for war. Seller Inventory # 11898
