From the Publisher
The Bible describes him as the son of God. Modern-day historians portray him in several different ways. To some he is a devout Jew intent on transforming the religion of his day. Others see him as a champion of the poor, a rebel who posed such a threat to the Roman Empire that he was executed. Or perhaps he was a sage stressing self-knowledge and an inner kingdom of wisdom, a Jesus for the third millennium.
In this provocative book, world-renowned BBC journalist Mark Tully travels to Israel, Egypt, Rome and India in search of answers to this two-thousand-year-old question. Drawing on ancient text, modern archaeology and interviews with historians, theologians and holy men, he paints a multilayered portrait of Jesus. In the course of this search for truth, he also finds himself on a personal pilgrimage that leads into the heart of his own beliefs.
"What I really like about Mark Tully is his personal touch. He takes us along on his journey." -- Harvey Cox, professor of divinity, Harvard University
"This thoughtful and open-minded book will capture the imagination of those who enjoy traveling in body and in spirit."--Marvin Meyer, author of The Secret Teachings of Jesus
EXCERPT FROM THE INTRODUCTION BY THOMAS MOORE
"For a Christian the quest for Jesus is the journey of a lifetime, a mythic journey, if there ever was one, to find the meaning of life. As readers, we not only get a glimpse of poetry and myth as the author explores story after story, figure after figure, we also are given splendid paintings and photographs to contemplate. Mr. Tully may have been off on a literal search among deserts, mountains and lakes, but readers sit comfortably at home with extraordinary images, pondering not only the presenting question concerning Jesus' history and purpose but also the author's own story. We look over his shoulder as he visits the holy places and has conversations with ardent scholars, and we are confronted with two mysteries, two myths: the inspiring yet puzzling l! ife and death of Jesus and the modern hero in search of spiritual meaning."--Thomas Moore
