Cloth, 8vo, 22 cm, 342 pp (pp 65-336 are facsimiles). Four Centuries of Fine Printing holds a unique place in the literature of printing. While there are many books on the development of typography, this volume presents a wide historical survey, including many printers whose merits have not been hitherto recognized. The text and the 272 plates cover the typography of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century Italy, the masterpieces of the early French Renaissance, the Lyons School, and the Imprimerie Royale, founded in 1640 at the instance of Richelieu, which initiated fashions that were followed at a 'a respectful distance by printers throughout Europe. The English eighteenth century is well represented and there are examples of modern, fine printing both in England and in the United States. In his text Mr. Morison gives brief biographies of the leading printers represented in the plates, and discusses their contributions to the art of printing.
