Forward With the Fifth – A History of the Fifth Battalion, 1st A.I.F. A. W. Keown | Revised Edition compiled by Carl Johnson | Melbourne, 2002 An important and increasingly difficult-to-find Australian First World War battalion history, Forward With the Fifth records the service of the 5th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force, one of Victoria’s original infantry battalions. Originally written by A. W. “Bert” Keown, himself an original member of the battalion, the work was first published in Melbourne in 1921. This substantially expanded 2002 Revised Edition was compiled by Carl Johnson and edited by Carl Johnson and Kristine Braddock, bringing Keown’s original history together with additional material, photographs and research. The 5th Battalion formed in Victoria in 1914 as part of the 2nd Brigade, 1st Australian Division. It sailed with the first contingent for Egypt and took part in the Gallipoli landing on 25 April 1915. The battalion subsequently fought through the Gallipoli campaign, including the costly fighting at Krithia, before serving on the Western Front. Its later battle honours included some of the most famous actions involving the AIF, including Pozières, Menin Road and Amiens. A particularly valuable feature of this revised edition is the inclusion of the 5th Battalion nominal roll of approximately 6,000 names, together with hundreds of photographs of soldiers and locations. This makes the book useful not only to military-history collectors but also to family historians and researchers tracing members of the 5th Battalion. Bibliographic details: Author: A. W.
