Print on Demand. This book tells the thrilling true story of China's battle against the opium trade, a struggle for ethical reform that the author argues ranks among the most consequential in history. The author charts the moral awakening, political ambitions and economic necessity that drove the movement. Crucially, the author places this compelling story within the context of China's broader ethical, political, and economic awakening in the early 20th century. Filled with vivid detail, the author argues that the movement ultimately succeeded because men like Yuen Shi Kai and Tong Shao Yi saw that China's economic future required drastic measures to eliminate the social scourge of opium use. Ultimately, the success of China's anti-opium campaign provides valuable insights into the complexities and possibilities of comprehensive social reform. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

But no; interest in the Object diminishes as it stands out more and more distinctly from the mists Of the horizon. Governments witness the awakening Of a new faith, a hope finally justified among the masses; and they confine themselves to developing the progress of arbitration; they refuse to go down to the root of the matter. Why are they waiting to be the last to arouse? For what impatience, what threats, what rebellions?
They are waiting until the franco-german reconciliation upon which everything else depends has become an accomplished fact; but at the same time they refuse to believe in the possibility Of such a miracle: they confine themselves to shaking their heads and abstain from any other compromising gesture. They are absorbed in their daily preoccupations, neglecting the vital prob lem for whose solution the entire world, with France and Ger many, is waiting to breathe freely again.
