Discover how Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt shaped Pittsburgh’s streets, stories, and sense of place.
The book traces the city’s colonial roots to its modern streets, tying landmarks to historic events.
This comprehensive history follows the forts at the Forks of the Ohio and the people whose choices left a lasting imprint on Pittsburgh. It surveys battles, treaties, and the shifting borders that bound a growing frontier, from Washington’s early journeys to Bouquet’s relief of besieged garrisons. Through vivid detail, the narrative connects fort sites, streets, and neighborhood lore to the era’s bold moves and quiet tensions.
Readers will encounter the key figures, the strategic moves, and the everyday life that helped shape the city’s map. The changing landscape is shown not as a sequence of dates, but as a web of names, places, and events that still echo in today’s Pittsburgh.
- Trace the chain of forts that began at Niagara and led to the Forks of the Ohio, marking strategic ground in early America.
- Meet Washington, Bouquet, and other leaders whose actions influenced settlement patterns and local memories.
- Explore how frontier conflicts, alliances with Indigenous nations, and settler activity shaped streets and neighborhoods.
- See how place names, landmarks, and physical geography reflect a deep, layered history.
Ideal for readers of local history and American frontier stories who want a grounded, city-focused view of the past.
