Print on Demand. This text delves into the world of propellers and their intricacies and behavior when an aircraft yaws. Written and corroborated by the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), the author provides a detail-rich and accurate analysis, supported by formulas and charts. The book begins by laying the groundwork with general formulas for side force and pitching moment coefficients, considering yaw, and explores the side-force derivative and the pitching moment derivative. It proceeds to develop charts that can be applied to calculate the normal force coefficient with angle of attack and the axis of rotation. The information presented is grounded in a combination of theoretical analysis and experimental evidence. Through the synthesis of these elements, the author provides a comprehensive investigation into propellers, rendering this book a valuable resource for professionals in the field of aeronautics and an insightful read for those with an interest in aircraft engineering. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

The equations, and the charts computed irom the equa tions, are based on an unpublished analysis, which incor porates factors not adequately covered in previously pub lished work and gives good agreement with experiment over a wide range of Operating conditions. A study of the equations indicates that they are consistent with the fol lowing physical interpretation: In developing side force, the propeller acts like a fin of which the area is the projected side area of the propeller, the effective aspect ratio is of the order of 8, and the effective dynamic pressure is roughly that at the propeller disk as augmenhfii by the inflow. The variation of the inflow velocity, for a fixed - pitch propeller, accounts for most of the varia tion of side force with advance - diameter ratio, The charts may be applied to obtain the rate of change of normal - force coefficient with angle of attack of the axis of rotation if proper account is taken of the upwash or downwash from the wing.
