Why This Coffee Table Book Belongs in Your Collection
Step back in time and experience the Holy Land of the 1850s through the pioneering lens of Francis Frith, one of the most daring photographers of his era. "Forgotten Light: Recalling Francis Frith's Lens on the Holy Lands" is a carefully curated coffee table book that brings together 37 remarkable photographs of biblical and historic sites in what is now modern-day Egypt, Israel, the West Bank, Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Syria.
Unlike any other photography collection, this book presents Frith’s work in a way that enhances the reader’s connection to the past. Each photograph is displayed in both its original sepia tone and a newly remastered black-and-white version, allowing for a fresh perspective on these rarely seen images. Accompanying each plate is an insightful description revealing obscure historical facts, biblical references, and the technical challenges Frith overcame to capture these breathtaking views.
This collection is entirely focused on Frith’s images of Sinai and Palestine, providing a unique glimpse into the landscapes and sacred sites of the 19th century.
◆Rarely Seen Vintage Photographs – Captured during arduous expeditions, these images represent some of the earliest photographic records of biblical locations.
◆Dual Presentation – Each photograph is showcased in its original sepia tone and a digitally remastered black-and-white version, offering two stunning interpretations of the past.
◆Hidden Stories and Little-Known Facts – Each image is accompanied by a compelling narrative, highlighting Frith’s technical achievements, the historical significance of the location, and biblical connections.
◆Technical Innovation & Artistic Vision – Frith used the collodion process under extreme conditions and worked with three different camera formats (8x10, 16x20, and stereoscopic pairs) to produce some of the largest and most detailed prints of his time.
