Forensic pathology answers two questions after every suspicious death: what happened to this person, and how do we know?
This book teaches you to follow that reasoning from the death scene through the autopsy and into the courtroom.
Nine chapters follow the order a trainee learns the field. You start with the legal system that decides who investigates a death, move to the body and the autopsy table, then work through injuries, poisons, the hardest cases, and expert testimony.
Real cases run throughout, from Song Ci’s 13th-century sickle investigation in China to the wrongful conviction of William Mullins-Johnson in Ontario. Overdose counts, prevention budgets, and jury verdicts all rest on what happens in the morgue, and each chapter shows the work done right and what follows when it goes wrong.
The nine chapters cover:
- Coroner and medical examiner systems, plus the difference between cause, mechanism, and manner of death
- Livor, rigor, and algor mortis
- Decomposition, vitreous chemistry, and insect evidence for estimating the postmortem interval
- The forensic autopsy step by step: identification by fingerprints, dental records, and DNA, trace evidence collection, organ dissection, histology, postmortem CT, and a report that holds up under cross-examination
- Sudden cardiac death, inherited rhythm disorders such as long QT syndrome, and the molecular autopsy
- Blunt and sharp force trauma, gunshot wounds, range of fire, hanging, strangulation, drowning, burns, and electrocution
- Postmortem toxicology, from GC-MS confirmation to redistribution, tolerance, and fentanyl deaths
- Infant deaths, abusive head trauma, elder neglect, and deaths in police custody
- Expert testimony under Frye and Daubert, cognitive bias, wrongful convictions, and the 2009 National Academy of Sciences report that pushed the field to tighten its standards
- Psychological autopsies and mass fatality response
The back matter adds a historical timeline that starts in 44 BCE with the examination of Julius Caesar’s 23 stab wounds, a glossary of terms, a reference list, and sample answers to the questions at the end of every chapter.
This book is written for:
- Students in forensic science, criminal justice, nursing, or medicine
- Attorneys and police officers who read autopsy reports for a living
- Crime writers who want their scenes to hold up
- Families handed a report full of terms like petechial hemorrhages with nobody to explain them
The writing is plain and direct. Bruises, ligature marks, and overdose levels are described as they are, because vague language makes this subject harder to learn.
You also see where the evidence runs out: why a bruise’s color says little about its age, why time of death comes as a range, and why a heart blood sample can read higher than a leg vein sample.
Once you reach the last page you can read an autopsy report, follow the reasoning behind each conclusion, and spot where a claim goes further than the evidence allows.
Song Ci set the standard almost 800 years ago, and it still holds: look carefully, say what the evidence shows, and be honest about what it doesn’t.
