Print on Demand. This book investigates the complexities of US-Soviet relations during and after WWII, discussing the strategic assumptions and ideological differences that have shaped the international landscape. The author presents evidence to argue that the US has consistently overestimated the threat of overt Soviet military aggression while underrating the significance of Soviet ambitions in other spheres of influence. It explores the challenges of understanding Soviet foreign policy through the lens of its Marxist-Leninist ideology and highlights the significance of the Soviet theory of peaceful coexistence, particularly in light of modern nuclear arsenals. The author emphasizes the need for a more nuanced approach to US-Soviet relations, urging readers to recognize the importance of non-military forms of Soviet influence while acknowledging the challenges of reconciling ideological differences. The book's insights are vital for understanding the complexities of this historic and ongoing geopolitical relationship. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

- Modern History of Russia
The purposes of foreign policy-any foreign policy - are to protect and preserve a nation and its institutions and to further its goals. Today, in the case of the United States, this means guaranteeing our survival in a thermonuclear age and at the same time guarding us and our ideals against inroads by communism.
It is difficult to avoid the conclusion that us. Policy has been dangerously inadequate on both counts ever since World War II. With the praiseworthy objective of promoting American security, us. Policy has been devoted primarily to ways and means of containing the Soviet Union as well as Communist influence generally. And what has happened? During the past fifteen years the Soviet Union has steadily grown not only in economic and military power but also in world influence, while the area domi nated by communism has expanded. At the same time, American policy has become wholly enmeshed in a nuclear arms race which, far from promoting our security, has within it the seeds of war and thus of destruction of our whole civilization.
Never before in the' history of mankind has so much been at stake in the relations between two nations as is at stake today in relations between the United States and the Soviet Union. Never before, and unless we are both wise and fortunate perhaps never again.
