About the Author
Sam Hampton-Smith is an author and designer who heads up a full-service design consultancy. He has previously lectured in multimedia design, and has developed specialisms in graphic design theory, CSS and interaction design. Sam writes for magazines and online publications in both the UK and the US, as well as contributing to books and journals. He currently lives in Scotland, while working with clients all over the world.
David Woodward first set metal type at the age of 11 when he swapped his collection of Enid Blyton books for an Adana hand press. After graduating, he worked freelance as a journalist and book designer for Routledge and Macmillan, and set up the company Design for Print. He was an early adopter of information technology and has written previously on typefaces for non-academic readers. For around 20 years David has been a part-time sessional lecturer in the typography department at the University of Reading.
Ambar Galan is a typographer and book designer from Mexico. After a BA in Graphic Design she worked for several years in a Mexican editorial company on various magazine titles. In 2012, one of her Life&Style layouts was nominated for a Society of Publication Designers award for Best Single Spread Design. After studying an MA in Book Design she started working for Pan Macmillan publishers in London where she now focuses on text design and complex typography.
Tony Seddon’s career as a graphic designer has taken him from his native Cornwall, via London and several publishing companies, to East Sussex where he now works as a freelance designer and writer. He has authored and co-authored multiple books, including Graphic Design for Non-designers; Thou Shall Not Use Comic Sans: A Designer's Almanac of Dos and Don'ts; Draw Your Own Fonts, 30 Alphabets to Scribble, Sketch and make Your Own; Greetings from Retro Design, Vintage Graphics Decade by Decade; Type Teams, Perfect Typeface Combinations and Why They Work; and The Evolution of Type, A Graphic Guide to 100 Landmark Typefaces.
